From 1929 to 1995, the daily New York City tabloid The Daily News was based at 220 East 42nd Street near Second Avenue, an official city and national landmark designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building was later used as the model for the Daily Planet in the first two Superman films. The News’s former broadcasting subsidiary WPIX-TV remains in the building.

An anonymous Yale alumnus made a generous gift in 2021 that facilitated the migration of the newspaper to a new and more user-friendly platform, facilitated the addition of issues from 1996 to the present, and will help ensure its ongoing maintenance and preservation.
