The Yale Daily News has been the primary source of news and debate on campus for over 130 years, and is the oldest college newspaper in the United States. YDN is read throughout the world and reaches over 3 million readers each weekday when school is in session. Many of its past student editors, writers, and contributors have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public life including William F. Buckley, John Hersey, Lan Samantha Chang, Paul Steiger, Sargent Shriver, Garry Trudeau, Calvin Trillin, and Daniel Yergin.

Founded in 1875 by Melville E. Stone, the paper quickly became known for its excellent international coverage and was widely syndicated in the United States. By the 1920s, it had a staff of top journalists and was known for its sensational headlines, social intrigue (such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that precipitated the abdication), and lurid photographs. After a series of owners, the newspaper came under the control of publisher Victor F. Lawson in 1944.

In 1948, the News established WPIX television and radio (its call letters were based on the newspaper’s nickname as “New York’s Picture Newspaper”). Both were later sold to Tribune and are still headquartered in the historic art deco Daily News Building on Manhattan’s West Side.

Today, the New York Daily News is one of the largest tabloid newspapers in the United States and reaches a circulation of over 2.4 million copies a day. In addition to its extensive city news and investigative reporting, the News contains a wide variety of entertainment, sports, and comics content.
