A daily newspaper is a periodical publication containing news, current events and opinion. It may contain general news of the day, city news, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics and a sports section. It also contains editorials and letters to the editor, as well as information on entertainment, education and local government. Most newspapers publish several editions a week, but some only publish once or twice a month.
The term “daily” refers to a paper published on a daily basis, but can also be used to describe a weekly or monthly publication. Daily newspapers are characterized by intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, large photographs and extensive advertisements for local businesses.
Many newspapers feature a variety of lifestyle features, such as restaurant reviews and listings, travel tips and destination guides, and real estate and home decorating advice. Some even include a food section that concentrates on local recipes. The majority of the stories in a daily newspaper are original pieces written by staff members. However, some dailies are owned by larger publishing chains and include reprints of articles from other sources.
Besides local stories, a daily newspaper often includes national and international news. It may contain reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other law-enforcement agencies, as well as reports on politics and the economy.
The New York Times, for example, features political analysis and commentary. It also has an extensive opinion section, as well as a section devoted to science and technology. In addition, the paper has a wide range of cultural and entertainment coverage, including book and movie reviews.
Weekly newspapers, on the other hand, typically focus on local and regional news. They usually have one or more advertising sales representatives whose primary job is to sell display advertisements. These advertisements are primarily from local businesses (although some larger companies from outside the coverage area may advertise).
The Yale Daily News, which is printed every weekday during the academic year, is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States. The newspaper was founded in 1878, and it is independent both financially and editorially. Several of the newspaper’s past editors and writers have gone on to achieve prominent positions in public life.
In the past, many weekly newspapers contained stories about one or more local high school or community sports teams, with detailed accounts of games and several photographs of the players. These types of stories are now largely a thing of the past, but some still include family news such as births, engagements and weddings, landmark birthdays and anniversaries, and obituaries. Some also include family news from a single neighborhood, although this is now less common than it once was. Many weekly newspapers also have a local business section and a list of upcoming events in their community. Some also carry a community section devoted to the celebration of different cultures and communities. These sections are often run in collaboration with the newspaper’s cultural centers and affiliated student groups.
